But what really appears to have ignited the conspiratorial imagination of U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Tulsa, is Benghazigate. Oklahoma’s senior senator has long accused the White House — as well as then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, with her unwomanly “forceful attitude” — of hiding some horrible misdeeds regarding the Sept. 11, 2012, attack in Libya. What those misdeeds are, exactly, hasn’t been so clear.
With
congressional hearings on the topic now under way, Inhofe has ratcheted
up the rhetoric. He recently called Benghazi “the most egregious
cover-up in American history” — evidently ignoring (or misrepresenting?)
the last, oh, century or so — and invoking some truly naughty language
in the process.
“People may be starting to use the I-word before too long,” he said in a radio interview.
That
word is “impeachment.” That’s right — nothing like some good,
old-fashioned impeachment threats to gum up the Beltway and legislative
process for the next three years.
Just
imagine if Benghazi-gate truly were an impeachable offense, what the
potential punishment could be for some of these real, in-the-flesh
scandals.
