The Three Snow Bears - Jan Brett

Children's book author and illustrator Jan Brett is currently in the midst of a 23-city tour to promote her latest book, "The Three Snow Bears." She'll arrive in Edmond on Sunday morning, on a huge bus emblazoned with graphics from the book.

"Actually, you're known as a very big book town," Brett said. "I think it's family values. You know, you have a lot of people that education of their kids is No. 1."

Naturally, Brett's signings aren't the usual sit-and-smile events. They're parties, with the first 100 kids in line receiving a poster, an autographed book and a photo with Brett.

Following is an open-to-everyone 20-minute talk, where she describes her creative process and how she gets her ideas. For the current book, she said, "I'll talk about Inuit culture and the whole world that is up north of our borders that we tend to forget about."

For instance, Brett said, did you know if you dipped your hand in the water up there and then hit it against something, your hand would shatter? Yep, it's that cold, and that's the kind of fact her grade-school fan base eats up.

"I like to tell stories. It's very exciting. It's like going for a ride," she said. "I try to express that to children. You have to let that happen. You have to let that ease on out. It's almost like an intellectual play."
