Prosecutors also charged the 54-year-old Gerhart with violating
the Oklahoma Computer Crimes Act by sending a threatening email to Sen. Cliff
Branan, R-Oklahma City, chairman of the Senate Energy Committee.
Gerhart wrote in his March 26 email, “Branan, get that bill heard
or I will make sure you regret not doing it. I will make you the laughing stock
of the Senate if I don’t hear that this bill will be heard and passed. We will
dig into your past, yoru (sic) family, your associates and once we start on you
there will be no end to it.”
The senator turned the email over to an Oklahoma Highway
Patrol, which subsequently asked the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to look into the matter.
Gerhart told reporters last week he sent the email in connection
with House Bill 1412, which sought to prohibit all government entities in Oklahoma from
implementing United Nations Agenda 21 policies. The measure passed the House, but Branan announced on April 2 that the Senate Energy
committee would not hear the bill.
Branan called HB 1412 "a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist."
Gerhart boasted at a news conference last week that if the Sooner
Tea Party did not get its way on specific legislation, it would
“intimidate and punish” House and Senate members. He added that his email was
“political advocacy” and not blackmail.
