Two Buddhist nuns from Britain bringing enlightenment to metro

Two Western Theravadan Buddhist nuns will be visiting Oklahoma City and Norman on Thursday through Saturday for informal gatherings and a one-day spiritual retreat. The nuns are from Amaravati Buddhist Monastery near Great Gaddesden in England.

Edmond resident Arpita Brown, a member of event sponsor Saranaloka Foundation, said the theme of Saturday's all-day retreat is "Embracing the Present." Brown said the events on Thursday and Friday will mark informal "meet and greet" time with the nuns.

Brown is a board member of the Saranaloka Foundation, an organization headquartered in San Mateo, Calif., that supports nuns' visits to the United States.

"The nuns come to the U.S. periodically to teach," she said. "We extended an invitation for them to come to Oklahoma, and they accepted."

The public is welcome at all three events. Thursday's session will be at 7 p.m. at Windsong Dojo, 2201 N.W. Interstate 44 Service Road.

The Friday night meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in Regents Room 310 at the Oklahoma Memorial Union on the OU campus in Norman.

Saturday's retreat is from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Wat Sangharatanaram Community Center, 5301 S. Foster. The retreat will feature:
" meditation sessions,
" teaching,
" discussion and
" a vegetarian meal.
