UCO's new Academy of Contemporary music plans event

Local country singer Devin Derrick will join British singer/songwriter Rokhsan for a Friday performance at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond.

The 7:30 p.m. show will serve as the first "recruiting event" for UCO's new Academy of Contemporary music, which opens this fall under the direction of Flaming Lips manager Scott Booker.

ACM@UCO is the American counterpart to the successful British academy, which combines rock 'n' roll instrumentation instruction with classes on how students can find and create careers in the modern music business. University spokeswoman Adrienne Nobles said more than 5,000 would-be students have expressed interest in the academy since it was announced in October.

ACM educators and organizers will be on-hand at Friday's "mixer" to answer questions posed by potential students and their parents, she said. Indie-folk singer Rokhsan studied at the British academy and Edmond's Derrick has been appointed an "ambassador" to ACM@UCO.

Space at Friday's recruiting event inside Evans Great Hall on the UCO campus, 100 N. University, is limited. Prospective students should e-mail [email protected] for more information. "Joe Wertz
