Undead, metalheads alike will arise, assemble with heavy hitters for pair of hellacious concerts

There's nothing scarier than a bunch of hardcore and heavy metal acts gathering for a haunted Halloween.

More than a dozen groups have been gathered for "Hella Weekend 2009," a two-night, twin-venue show organized by Tony Proctor, founder of Big Papa Productions.

"I have such a huge request for bands that want to play a Halloween show that I had to do two," he said.

The event kicks off 7 p.m. Friday at the Coca-Cola Bricktown Events Center with Horse Called War, Revolution Pariah and several heavy local openers, including Serriform and Soul Crisis.

Halloween night will be celebrated with The Freaker's Ball at Rock Theater, led by Rikets, Bleeding Wisdom and supporting acts like Numbers Game, Defected, Kill the Silence and Harmful of Swallowed.

Proctor expects more than a thousand at Friday's show and hopes the audience dresses up for the concert's costume contest.

"We'll have judges walking around, and they will hand out a ticket (to whom they think should be in the contest). The crowd will pick who the clear-cut winner is," he said. "All 10 contestants will receive something."

Certificates for two $200 tattoos will be among the prizes, Proctor said.

Saturday's Halloween concert is a smaller-scale show booked for the Rock Theater, which started as a church. The venue later served as a movie theater and a dance club before its current incarnation, he said.

"Basically, it's like a movie theater inside there, and there are three different levels down to the stage," said Danny Taylor, guitarist for Bleeding Wisdom. "There's a good light show and the audio is phenomenal. Louder is better."

Proctor expects 600 to 700 attendees at Saturday's concert, and while some may stereotype hardcore music with violence, he said it's the opposite in Oklahoma.

"Metal in Oklahoma is different because it's overlooked a lot. A lot of the clubs won't book metal, which is so totally off because every metal show in Bricktown I do " they are glad I'm here because they know there's not going to be any trouble," he said. "They all police themselves because we're a family."
