The Oklahoma City chapter of the Williams Syndrome Association will hold a 5K run/walk Saturday to raise awareness and funds for people with the disorder. The event will be held at Stars and Stripes Park at Lake Hefner.
A genetic condition that affects the heart, growth and learning abilities, Williams syndrome is present in roughly 20,000 to 30,000 individuals in the United States alone. Despite the health problems they face, people with Williams syndrome commonly have highly developed verbal skills, sociable personalities and a love of music.
Event coordinator Haley Franklin knows about the condition firsthand. Her 3-year-old daughter, Peyton, was diagnosed with it two weeks after she was born.
Ive met other individuals whose families have Williams syndrome, said Haley Franklin. A lot of them didnt get all the help they needed because they were undiagnosed. We were lucky to get Peyton diagnosed early. Early intervention is key.
The event will feature a bounce house, cake walk, bake sale, silent auction, face painting and live music.
