This weekend while you’re carving pumpkins and stocking up on treats, the Central Oklahoma Humane Society suggests you add “adopt a pet” to your Halloween to-do list.
Saturday and Sunday, PetSmart Charities will sponsor Woofness on Wheels, an adoption tour scheduled to stop at five metro locations.
“Our goal is to get 200 pets adopted in two days,” said Amy Shrodes, manager of development for the Central Oklahoma Humane Society. “So many animals go to the shelter. We’re trying to save as many as we can.”
The tour kicks off from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday at PetSmart, 1417 W. Interstate 240, before heading to Science Museum Oklahoma, 2100 N.E. 52nd, from noon to 3 p.m. Woofness on Wheels finishes the day at the Ninth Street Festival, 9 N.W. Ninth, from 5 p.m. to midnight.
“Whether you already own a pet or you’re looking to adopt, everyone is welcome,” Shrodes said.
That festival will feature live music, a cat castle, food and clothing vendors and, of course, lots of adoptable pets.
On Sunday, the first stop on the tour is from 8 a.m. to noon at Church of the Servant, 14343 N. MacArthur, before moving to the Edmond PetSmart, 1921 S. Broadway, from 2 to 5 p.m.
All animals up for adoption have been spayed or neutered and microchipped, and are up-to-date on vaccinations, as well as flea/tick and heartworm prevention, if old enough.
The Humane Society isn’t the only organization aiming to get pets adopted this month. To celebrate October being National Dog Adoption Month, Oklahoma City Animal Welfare hosts Dogtober, a series of Halloween-themed adoption events. The city hopes to find homes for 900 dogs and cats by Oct. 31.
From noon to 5:45 p.m. Saturday, Dogtoberfest will be at the city animal shelter, 2811 S.E. 29th, and will feature a demonstration from the OKC Police Department’s K-9 Unit.
Muttster Mash is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Midwest City PetSmart, 6237 S.W. Third. Costumes are welcome.
