Children have the opportunity to visit their favorite animals at the Oklahoma City Zoo, 2101 N.E. 50th, for the price of a homemade ornament and a buck.

Rather than the regular entrance fee of $4 for children, edible wildlife ornaments along with $1 is the price of admission during "Deck the Zoo," an annual holiday program running now through Christmas Eve.

"It's a fun way to give our guests a little bit of a discount and also feed some of our animals," said Candice Rennels, marketing manager.

Ornaments can be made with a number of edible items, but the more creative the ornament, the better it is for the event, Rennels said. Peanut butter-covered pinecones dipped in birdseed, threaded orange slices, and garland comprised of Froot Loops and Cheerios are a few of the ornaments kids have brought in years past.

While the program lasts, adults receive free entry with the paid admission of a child. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, several other children's programs are scheduled, such as cupcake making, ostrich egg painting and special appearances by Santa Claus as he feeds holiday treats to the animals.

The Oklahoma City Zoo is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. For more information, call 424-3344 or visit www.okczoo.com. "Ta'Chelle Jones
